Shōjō is a traditional music project led by ChihiroNao, a performer of Japanese classical instruments from Sanuki, Kagawa Prefecture. In collaboration with musicians and individuals involved in traditional culture, we create contemporary traditional music inspired by the rhythms of Sanuki Shishimai (lion dance).
Traditional music evolves gradually, shaped by historical context and the unique individuality of each performer, while preserving the techniques passed down through generations. Embracing this pivotal moment in history, we are dedicated to fully enjoying the present and sharing the rich traditions of Sanuki with the world.
Projects
We bring traditional Japanese culture
and its joy into your everyday.
"Hare to Ke" is a concept of time and space that embodies the traditional worldview of Japan. "Hare" signifies special occasions or celebratory moments, while "Ke" represents the ordinary rhythm of daily life.
Shojo has been actively pursuing various initiatives based on the idea of "bringing 'Hare' into your everyday life" through the medium of traditional Japanese music and culture.

The Thoughts of Shōjō
In my town, there is a fall festival where the sound of drums and bells fills the streets, and lions, adorned in colorful cloth, dance joyfully. During the festival, people of all ages come together, exchanging greetings, catching up on each other's lives, and enjoying lively, fun moments. Originally, this festival began as a prayer for a bountiful harvest, but over time, it has become a vital event for fostering communication across the entire community.
When we think of tradition, it often seems distant or difficult to approach, but what Shōjō offers is traditional music born from these very festivals. This music is rooted in the celebrations that have been passed down through generations, long before formal music education even existed. Some of the festivals throughout Japan may have begun with a playful, drunken elder dancing, surrounded by laughter and applause. The music and cultural practices that have been cherished by millions of Japanese people throughout history are rapidly disappearing, as a result of factors like a declining birthrate, an aging population, and rural depopulation. Festivals, especially in smaller rural areas, are fading away one by one.
However, traditional culture is constantly evolving, shaped by historical contexts and the unique personalities of those who carry it forward. Every era is a moment in time, and when challenges arise, we overcome them with the spirit of “celebrating the times.” This resilience has been passed down to us, and we continue to enjoy and adapt it today.
Through the Shōjō project, I aim to bring traditional culture to life in collaboration with today’s people, sharing the joy of these traditions with others. Many around the world admire and love Japanese culture, and by delivering Shōjō’s music to them, I hope to inspire a desire to visit Japan, experience real festivals, and engage with the culture firsthand. This may, in turn, help bring about small changes in society.
I wish to spread Shōjō’s music throughout Japan and the world, inviting others to say, "There’s an interesting festival over there." By doing so, we can enjoy the present moment, which is a passing point in the evolution of tradition, and let its sounds resonate into the future.
